Outline:

Climate change is the defining issue of our time. This presentation will discuss, through the presenter’s research, teaching and practice, how it is possible to reduce our impact on climate change. The presentation includes applied research in smart passive cooling systems at the University of California Los Angeles and at Cal Poly Pomona; hands-on architectural education through the construction and evaluation of low cost sustainable buildings in California and Mexico; and practice implementing building science and performance simulation in projects in all continents at CallisonRTKL.

Short bio of the lecturer:

Prof. Dr.Pablo La Roche

Pablo La Roche is Associate Vice President, Sustainable Design Leader at CallisonRTKL and Professor of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University. Dr. La Roche has more than 25 years of experience in professional practice, designing and implementing sustainable, low carbon strategies in award winning projects all over the world.

La Roche has a PhD from the University of California Los Angeles and his research interests include passive cooling systems, green roofs, low-energy, and low carbon architecture, publishing more than 130 papers on these topics, including his book Carbon Neutral Architectural Design with a second edition published in 2017. In 2013 he co-chaired the BESS SB13 conference in Cal Poly Pomona California and in 2016 he chaired the Passive Low Energy Architecture PLEA conference in Los Angeles. He is a member of the International Advisory board of PLEA 2017 and PLEA 2018 conferences in Edinburgh and Hong Kong. He was president of the Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE) and chair of the solar buildings division of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES).
